Editorial Review for Oak Bluffs – by Lesley Balla

The Scene
There's a funky vibe to Oak Bluffs. Victorian accents abound; almost every building is brightly colored and tourist-friendly. Called Cottage City until 1907, mostly due to the gingerbread houses in the Methodist Campground, O.B. is the busiest port for boaters, locals and tourist ferries, so it's almost always loud and congested in high season. It's also one of the only towns with alcohol: most of the island is dry.

The Experience

Nightclubs, restaurants and trinket shops fill Circuit Avenue. Teens and 'tweens hang out at the game rooms while little ones try to catch a brass ring at the Flying Horses Carousel (built in 1876). College kids hit the bars, some which stay open year-round. Day-trippers comb the shops and admire yachts that line the harbor and dock right up to the sidewalk on Lake Avenue. In addition to Sunday services, the Tabernacle holds concerts throughout the summer.

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

I have been visiting MV/Oak Bluffs for the last 5 years. I always stay @ the Surfside hotel, which is directly across the street from the ferry. This area is so incredibly beautiful and would highly recommend it to anyone and have! Taking your owncar is by far the best deal, since you can take in all the sites as you please. Public transportation is available, but taking your own vehicle is the only way to go. Call the MV Ferry for details and reservation info. Oak Bluffs is not a dry town, night clubs and restaurants are incredible. Gay Head is one of the most beautiful natural areas I have ever seen. I love MV because it is so non-commercialized and the island itself feels like a tropical getaway during the summer months. You must see it to appreciate all it has to offer!

Pros: Beautiful, The ocean, shopping!

Cons: can become crowded, sometimes pricey, few public restrooms

We went by boat and did not like being in the center of town, which is where the marina is. Very commercial and good for those with small kids and teenagers. Reminded me of Coney Island 20 years ago.

Pros: inexpensive, can walk everywhere, quaint

Cons: not too clean, tacky, food of poor quality

Editor's Review

On the northeastern side of the island is an amalgam of everything the Vineyard is, was and will be.  See the full editorial review.
