Editorial Review for Wesley Hotel – by Lesley Balla

The Scene
Right off the main strip in Oak Bluffs, the façade of this beautiful old Victorian boasts lots of windows and a big porch with a seemingly endless supply of rocking chairs. The lobby, filled with antiques and dark wood trim, leads to a dining room set for afternoon tea or morning coffee. The staff, in true Island fashion, is friendly and helpful.

The Details
There's just enough to make your stay comfortable, but nothing extravagant. Built in 1876, it was once the grand dame of stays on the Vineyard, but today the rooms are clean and accommodating, yet sparse, with private (small) baths, cable TV and no phone. The ferry dock is a few blocks away and the beach is a five-minute walk. Since Oak Bluffs is one of two towns that aren't dry on the Island, there's plenty of nightlife nearby, including many restaurants.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

It's a great hotel for families, so if a quiet retreat is what you're looking for, try something up-Island.

The Extras

Walk behind the hotel to find the Tabernacle and the charming, colorful cottages of the Methodist Campground.

When to Go

Two of the best summer events take place near the hotel in August. The gingerbread cottages light up for Illumination Night, and the fireworks that don't happen on the Fourth of July take place around the gazebo in Ocean Park.

For the price paid off-season ($165.00 for one night plus tax) the room was rather dark and dingy. The ocean view from the porch outside of the room was great, inside the room you would have to sit on the floor to look out of the windows as they were that low to the ground. The specially advertised satellite TV featured only 24 channels. The brochure I took at check-in stated there were 48 channels, when I asked about it I was told I must have an old brochure in a very snippy tone. Overall it was the customer service I felt lacked the most. There were absolutely no pleasantries or warmth, everyone across the board was unwelcoming, cold and indifferent. Based on that alone I would not go back or recommend this hotel. It had the price of a beautiful historical inn with the customer service and ambiance of a cheap motel that rents rooms by the hour to seedy characters. I'd say anyone could do better!

Pros: Pretty views, convenient location to bus and ferry

Cons: Terrible customer service, outdated, dark rooms

If you do your research you will see that this hotel on Martha's Vineyard is terrible. The best part of this hotel is leaving. Do yourself a favor and don't even arrive. They charge your card in advance because they know that once you see the rooms you will demand a refund. BTW: They have a policy of absolutely no refunds -- go figure. Want to do more research, check Trip Advisor/Yahoo/Etc.

Pros: Can walk to from the Oak Bluffs ferry, its on Martha's Vineyard.

Cons: Everything else
